MACULAR DISEASES
Macular diseases or macular degeneration are diseases of the retina of the eye. The most ordinary form is age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Congenital or childhood macular degeneration is rare.
Macular degeneration can slowly or speedily result in the degeneration of retinal cells.
Wet macular degeneration can result in rapid and irreversible vision loss, but there are treatment options available. If wet macular degeneration is diagnosed early, it is treatable.
Dry Macular Degeneration causes your vision to decline slowly most of the time. It is still possible to develop extreme vision loss; therefore, there is a need to diagnose it early and manage it accordingly.
Risk factors:
- Smoking
- High blood pressure
Effects of macular degeneration:
- Decrease in visual acuity.
- Decrease in contrast sensitivity.
- Decrease in colour vision.
- Decrease in adaptability to changing lighting conditions.
- Increasing glare sensitivity
- Central visual field defects
