DIABETIC EYE EXAMS
Diagnosing diabetic eye disease early is the most effective way of treating and preventing vision loss associated with diabetic eye disease. If you have been diagnosed with diabetes and notice hazy vision, please make an appointment. Regular check ups and strict diabetic control is the mainstay of the management of diabetic retinopathy.
Diabetic Retinopathy Diagnosis
Drops will be administered in your eye to increase the size of the pupil. This enables the ophthalmologist to check through a specially designed lens to examine the interior of your eye.
Your doctor may conduct an optical coherence tomography (OCT) to closely examine the retina. A machine helps scan the retina and provides incredibly detailed images of how thick it is and if there is any swelling of the retina. This helps your doctor trace and record the swelling of the macula and monitor the disease.
Fluorescein angiography (OCT angiography) allows the doctor to visualise what is happening with the blood vessels in the retina. Fluorescein angiography uses a yellow dye (fluorescein), which is injected into a vein (usually in the arm). The dye migrates through the blood vessels. A camera records images of the retina as the dye spreads throughout its blood vessels. This reveals if there are any blood vessels that are blocked or leaking liquid. It also shows if any unusual blood vessels are developing.
