MACULAR DEGENERATION DIAGNOSIS
During your eye exam, your ophthalmologist may ask you to look at an Amsler grid. This grid helps you identify any hazy, distorted, or blank spots in the field of vision. Your ophthalmologist will also examine the inside of the eye through a specialised lens to see if there are any significant changes in the retina and macula.
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an alternative way to examine the retina. A machine scans the retina and offers highly detailed images of the retina and macula. It is routinely done to monitor Macular Degeneration.
Your doctor may carry out fluorescein angiography to find out what exactly is happening with the retina. Yellow dye (fluorescein) is administered into a vein, usually in the arm. The dye spreads through the blood vessels. A special camera captures precise images of the retina as the dye migrates throughout the blood vessels. This reveals if new, unhealthy blood vessels are forming underneath the retina.
